Mums head back to work to fund family's cash gap

According to Avon (as in Avon Calling) 70% of Great Britain’s mums need to go out to work. 7 out of every 10 questioned will be heading back to work sooner than they expected due to money concerns, with a third aiming to begin work immediately. The Avon Mum-Economics Study of over 1,000 stay-at-home mums, which was funded by Avon Cosmetics, also shows that the majority of these women are worried that there aren’t enough flexible employment opportunities for mums looking to return to work.
The real question is: are there enough employment opportunities – never mind flexible? With unemployment 2 million and rapidly rising to a predicted peak of 3 million (or possibly nearer 3.5 million depending on how pessimistic you are) many will have a real problem finding even part time work.
When asked why they needed to head back to work sooner than planned, a fifth said the cash gap in their family’s budgets and 27% were worried about the impact the recession will have on their family’s income. One in ten said that they’re concerned that their husband is likely to be made redundant over the next year.
 
Anna Segatti, President of Avon UK, says, “What we are seeing is a real blitz spirit, with women jumping into action to help fund their family through the tough times. The main obstacles women foresee focus on finding flexible work, with over half the mums we spoke to worried about managing the school run, kids' sick days and of course school holiday schedules. The cost of childcare also presents concerns for mums, with over half the mums worried that the cost of childcare will not leave enough money to cover household costs.
Avon has launched a recruitment drive with a UK-wide initiative to sign up new Representatives to its flexible self-employed work.
Maxine Benson, Founder of Everywoman, the UK's leading provider of training, resources and support services for women in business says, “Now that returning to work is such a pressing need for women across the UK we have seen a growth in women starting up their own businesses during the current economic climate. We expect to see this rise even more in the near future as women have to seek out flexible earnings opportunities to fit around their family needs.”
