Father of the bride no longer footing the bill

www.moneyagonyaunt.com today reports that the world of weddings has changed. The Father of the bride is no longer footing the bill. Over the last five years, parents have paid all the costs at only 4 per cent of weddings, according to a survey by lovemoney.com.21-06-2010

What’s more, 28 per cent of couples have borrowed to pay for some or all of their wedding.
Widespread borrowing isn’t surprising given that few single people start saving for their big day years in advance:
•         89 per cent of singles won’t start a wedding savings plan until they have met their partner.
•         57 per cent would only think about starting a savings plan when they were engaged.
Some people are just reluctant to save up for a wedding that may never happen, but it actually would be financially smart and make sense.

It’s also worth getting advice when planning a wedding. 40 per cent of respondents believe that they spent more than they would have liked on their wedding because no one offered them financial advice.
  Other key findings:

•         50% of those surveyed think venues and suppliers charge more as soon as they know they’re dealing with a wedding couple.
•         70% think they spent the right amount of money on the wedding and honeymoon.
•         The average cost of a wedding over the last five years was £10,283.
•         The average cost of a honeymoon was £2751.
•         Overseas weddings are disliked by many guests. 40% of people who have attended an overseas wedding said that the following statement was a fair summary of their view on the subject:
