STUDENTS COULD SAVE £4,000 A YEAR AND STILL HAVE WHEELS

British undergraduates could knock £4,000 off the cost of a degree by changing their motoring habits.21-01-2010

In a week when the Shadow Universities Secretary has said he would consider raising annual tuition fees to £7,000 a year it’s now more important than ever for students to find ways to save money. Zipcar the car sharing company believes campus car sharing will become commonplace across UK campuses by 2020 as students seek ways to keep living costs under control and as universities embrace stronger environment programmes.

Recent research has shown that bringing a car to university can cost UK undergraduates up to £1,300 a year through petrol, road tax, maintenance and an annual MOT, leaving many students wishing they hadn’t brought their car to campus. However, life without a car can be incredibly impractical for students, especially in big cities where trips to the supermarket become inconvenient on the bus and long distance travel is similarly expensive.
