MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota on Friday announced several days of programs intended to increase awareness of racial stereotyping ahead of next months campus NFL game between the Vikings and Redskins.University officials have said theyre working with the Minnesota Vikings to keep Washingtons Redskins name from being used when the teams play at TCF Bank Stadium on Nov. 2. That issue hasnt been resolved. The programs start more than a week before the game and include panel discussions and the screening of a documentary about American Indian mascots in sports. The university said the goal is to increase awareness and discussion about the effects of stereotyped American Indian mascots and logos.Katrice Albert, the universitys vice-president of equity and diversity, told reporters Friday that some of our community think that the Washington team name is offensive and other parts of our community dont really understand why its offensive. She said the intent is to share all voices on the issue. The university will accommodate demonstrators who plan to rally against the Washington teams name outside the stadium before the game, Albert said. But she said the school cannot prevent fans from wearing regalia with the Redskins name or image. It is freedom of expression, Albert said.Nor can the university bar the Washington team from displaying its logo at the stadium, she said.Vikings vice-president Lester Bagley said Friday his team supports and encourages the universitys efforts. The Vikings are playing on the university campus for two seasons while the teams new stadium is being built at the site of the old Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.Weve very sensitive to the issue (of American Indian mascot names). Its a big issue, Bagley said. But he added that the Vikings are obligated to market the Redskins game as they do with every opponent.A Redskins spokesman did not immediately return a phone call for comment Friday. Some Native American leaders have demanded the Washington teams name be changed, calling it a racial slur. Redskins owner Dan Snyder has vowed to never change the name, saying it honours Native Americans. Nicknamed "The Voice of God" for his stylish, elegant introductions, Sheppard was the ballparks public address announcer from April 1951 until Sept. 7, 2007. Before Sheppard took ill, Jeter asked Sheppard to record his introduction, which has been used when the Yankees captain walked to the plate for home games. "Hes as important as any player thats been here. Hes part of the experience," Jeter said after Monday nights win over the Baltimore Orioles. "Part of the experience of Yankee Stadium is Bob Sheppards voice." Sheppard debuted for the Yankees on April 17, 1951, and worked his final game on Sept. 5, 2007. He missed the 2007 AL division series because of a bronchial infeection, ending his streak of 121 consecutive post-season games at Yankee Stadium.dddddddddddd. He was replaced by Jim Hall, his longtime sub, and Paul Olden took over when the Yankees moved to the new ballpark in 2009. Sheppard announced his retirement after the 2009 season and died in July 2010 at age 99. Jeter, the Yankees 40-year-old captain, is likely to play his final home game Thursday night, since New York probably will miss the playoffs. He said he had gone to Sheppard with the idea of the recording. "Thats the only voice Id heard growing up, and thats the only voice I wanted to hear when I was announced at home," Jeter said. "And fortunately he agreed to do it." Recordings of Sheppard are used to welcome fans to Yankee Stadium at times, but Jeters introduction will be its last in-game airing.
