RALEIGH, N.C. -- Marek Zidlickys shot hit a teammate, then the post. It spun in front of the net, and took a left turn across the goal line. A few more breaks like that, and these New Jersey Devils might follow a similar, meandering path to a playoff berth. Dainius Zubrus scored two goals and the short-handed Devils beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 on Saturday night. Travis Zajac scored the go-ahead goal on his deflection of Zidlickys second-period shot to help the Devils earn a point in their seventh straight game. "Weve been so close to these kind of wins all throughout the year and just somehow havent racked them up in a row," winning goalie Cory Schneider said. "If youre going to go on a run, these are the ones you need to grind out, and thats what weve been doing the last couple of games." They found a way to do it without some of their cornerstone players -- forwards Patrik Elias and Adam Henrique, who were both hurt the night before in a win against Washington. "I knew we had character in that room," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "A lot of people were writing us off, and I knew there was no quit in that dressing room. These guys are going to play right until they tell us we cant play anymore." The Devils improved to 4-0-3 during a stretch that has given their playoff chances a significant boost. "Weve been picking up points, and weve been playing some good hockey," Zajac said. "Weve got to try to find a way to keep this going and see what happens." Jeff Skinner scored for Carolina, which had its two-game winning streak snapped. The Hurricanes had kept their faint playoff hopes alive by earning points in their previous five games. "I think a lot of guys" played with desperation, coach Kirk Muller said. "We just didnt have everybody. Its too bad, because we had a few good games here that we went on the road and played hard and earned the points. "I dont want to take it away from the group of guys that came and did what theyre supposed to do and played hard," he added. "But we didnt have everyone on the page tonight, and when youre playing tight games like this, playoff mentality, youre not going to get the result." Schneider stopped 26 shots for the Devils, including all eight he faced in the third period, for his second straight victory. Anton Khudobin made 20 saves in his first loss since March 25. New Jersey won the season series 3-1, and a strange goal initially credited to Zidlicky at 6:34 of the second turned out to be the winner. His shot from between the circles had some english on it as it hit the left post, and it spun in the blue paint behind Khudobin before curving across the red line. It was later determined that the puck clicked off Zajac on its way toward the net. "I thought it went in the first time" off the post, Zajac said. When the Hurricanes couldnt tie it during the final 13 1/2 minutes of the period, the Devils could just about count on a victory: They improved to 22-1-5 when leading after two periods while the Hurricanes fell to 4-24-4 when trailing after 40 minutes. Zubrus then iced it with an empty-netter with 37.6 seconds left. Both teams entered on the outside of the playoff picture, though the Devils had a significantly better chance to crack the Easts field of eight. New Jersey entered with 82 points -- three behind Columbus, which holds the second wild-card spot in the East, and three ahead of the Hurricanes, who were coming off consecutive 4-1 wins over playoff-calibre teams Pittsburgh and Dallas. "You get out of it what you put into it," Muller said. "We had some guys that really put everything into it. Some guys didnt, and at the end of the night, you fall short." Zubrus put the Devils up 1-0 with 4:27 left in the first when he took a feed from Michael Ryder near the blue line, skated in on Khudobin and beat him with a slick backhand. Skinner tied it 5:31 into the second -- with a little help from the video-review crew. His high, knuckling shot from the right circle appeared to hit the crossbar. A review showed the shot actually hit the camera inside the net -- giving him his career-high-tying 31st goal. "We were engaged, we had good focus and I think we responded well when they scored," Zajac said. "I thought for the most part, we controlled that game." NOTES: Carolina RW Alexander Semin was back after missing two games with an undisclosed illness. ... New Jersey RW Tuomo Ruutu had an assist in his first game in Raleigh since he was dealt to the Devils at the deadline by the Hurricanes. Thiago Silva Jersey . "I had a pretty good year," the soft-spoken Granberg told TSN.ca with a grin from the teams annual rookie tournament in London. A fourth-round selection in 2010, Granberg is worth keeping an eye on with NHL training camps rolling around in less than a week. The six-foot-two, 200-pound defender may not possess the wow-inspiring theatrics of fellow prospect Morgan Rielly, but nonetheless has a chance to contribute with the Leafs when all is said and done this season. Rodrigo Caio Jersey . Rajne Soderberg, the director of the Stockholm Diamond League event, said in an email Friday that the ban still holds. Euromeetings, the organization representing Europes top track events, "will continue to recommend that members do not invite athletes who we believe cause disrepute to our meetings and our sport. http://www.officialbrazilonline.com/world-cup-giuliano-football-jersey/. In this weeks Leaf Report podcast, James Mirtle and Jonas Siegel debate whether Toronto can continue their shootout dominance and discuss what Dave Nonis game plan should be heading into the trade deadline. Fabinho Jersey . Cabrera-Bello shot a 1-over-par 73 and was caught by Webster, who carded 70 at Doha Golf Club for three-round totals of 12-under 204. They were only one stroke ahead of Adrien Saddier of France, the biggest mover with six birdies in his opening seven holes in a round of 64, South African Thomas Aiken (70) and Denmarks Thorbjorn Olesen (6Cool on a packed leaderboard. Gil Jersey .com) - Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were among the third-round winners Friday at the French Open.(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings will aim for their first set of consecutive wins in over a month when they visit the Boston Bruins for Saturdays evening showdown at TD Garden. The defending Stanley Cup champions halted a four-game slide (0-2-2) with Wednesdays close win over visiting Chicago and they hope to keep it going today in Beantown. Los Angeles, however, hasnt put together two wins in a row since notching consecutive home victories against St. Louis and Arizona on Dec. 18 and 20, respectively. L.A., which is one point behind Calgary for the last playoff spot in the West, also will try to get off to a positive start on its five-game road trip. The Kings enter Saturdays road tilt with a poor 5-9-6 mark as the guest compared to a 16-6-6 record at home. Los Angeles has 38 points at home this season, tying the 1980-81 and 1990-91 teams for the most points through 28 home games in franchise history. The Kings earned their 16th home win of 2014-15 with a 4-3 triumph over the Blackhawks, who lost in seven games to L.A. in last springs battle for the Western Conference title. Jake Muzzin scored the game-winning goal with 3:37 to play, helping the Kings overcome several one-goal deficits to record the regulation win. L.A. trailed 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before eclipsing the Hawks. Tyler Toffoli returned to the lineup after a six-game absence due to mononucleosis and delivered the tying goal just 2:34 before Muzzin scored the game-winner. Jeff Carter finished with two goals and an assist for the Kings, while Jonathan Quick stopped 26-of-29 shots in the win. It was huge, Toffoli said. It was the last game at home for a while, and playing against a really good team like Chicago. I think we played really well tonight. After todays tilt, L.A. is idle until visiting Washington on Tuesday. The Kings wont play their next home test until hossting Calgary on Feb.dddddddddddd. 12. The Bruins enter Saturday having posted a 7-1-1 record over their last nine games and Boston recently wrapped a three-game road trip with a win on Long Island. Boston capped a 2-0-1 swing with Thursdays 5-2 rout of the New York Islanders. Milan Lucic and Reilly Smith tallied three points each, while Tuukka Rask made 43 saves to anchor the victory at Nassau Coliseum. Lucic and Smith each had a goal and two assists for Boston. Patrice Bergeron, Kevan Miller and Torey Krug also hit the net. Boston led 2-0 in the first period before allowing the Isles to even the score on second-period goals from John Tavares and Michael Grabner. However, Miller tallied the game-winner with just 3.4 seconds remaining in the middle stanza and the Bruins added to their cushion in the third period with goals from Krug and Lucic. In the third period, we found that game again that was so good for us in the first, said Bruins coach Claude Julien. Boston will try to avoid getting swept in the two-game season series against L.A. The Kings recorded a 2-0 home win over the Bs on Dec. 2 with Quick making 31 saves for the shutout. The Bruins have lost two of three and seven of their last 10 overall encounters with the Kings, but Boston has taken the last two meetings at TD Garden. Quick boasts a 7-3-0 career mark against Boston with a 2.04 goals against average. Rask is 1-1-0 with a 2.20 GAA in two lifetime appearance in this matchup. The Bruins recalled goaltender Malcolm Subban from Providence of the American Hockey League on Friday and sent Rasks regular backup Niklas Svedberg to the AHL squad for conditioning. Subban, younger brother of Montreal star defenseman P.K. Subban, was the 24th overall pick of the 2013 NHL draft. He has never played at the NHL level and this marks his first call-up to the Bruins.
